Primitive Rhythm No. 04 explores the relationship between structure and spontaneity, bringing together translucent layers of watercolor, intricate hand-drawn ink marks, expressive black splatter, and unexpected passages of red.

At its center, thousands of individually placed marks move across the soft blue form, changing in density, direction, and scale as they follow its contours. Layers of pale watercolor extend beyond and within the form like shifting boundaries, currents, or topographical lines. Against this meticulous repetition, the sweeping red gestures and explosive areas of black introduce something instinctive and unpredictable.

From a distance, the piece reads as a single abstract organism or landscape. Up close, it becomes something entirely different as the eye is drawn into the individual marks, subtle variations, overlapping washes, and evidence of the hand that created them.

The contrast between repetition and interruption, precision and freedom, gives Primitive Rhythm No. 04 its sense of movement and aliveness.
